Costs a tremendous amount of money, costs a bunch to treat car crash victims under the NHS or emergency care in the US, same with the victims of health complications due to air pollution via cars which kills more than smoking (and given that it's 2016, I now have to specify tobacco) does in the world, it took a lot of seizures of private land, it took a lot of organization and central planning, and a huge production process. But, they don't want streets rebalanced as it does suit them wanting to drive everywhere. Socialist perhaps, but for me it's about giving choices and giving balance back to those who don't or can't drive. The Ranty Highwaymanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17361350433158148025noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-44228924602033732042016-10-21T07:06:20.124+01:002016-10-21T07:06:20.124+01:00Spot on that!Spot on that! The Ranty Highwaymanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17361350433158148025noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-72676216202275948732016-10-21T07:05:53.056+01:002016-10-21T07:05:53.056+01:00I don't have the answers here, so I can only j...I don't have the answers here, so I can only just keep trying to push positive images of cycling and indeed walking. The Ranty Highwaymanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17361350433158148025noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-62033236871391320712016-10-21T07:04:55.793+01:002016-10-21T07:04:55.793+01:00Plus I think people hate change in any case and so...Plus I think people hate change in any case and so that's two things to be overcome; the change and change itself. The Ranty Highwaymanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17361350433158148025noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-82027809755488632562016-10-21T07:03:46.266+01:002016-10-21T07:03:46.266+01:00It is probably even more difficult, but common gro...It is probably even more difficult, but common ground could get more people together. The Ranty Highwaymanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17361350433158148025noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-91238568143043325782016-10-20T21:05:26.266+01:002016-10-20T21:05:26.266+01:00"This essentially stems from a libertarian vi..."This essentially stems from a libertarian viewpoint about having a small state which does not interfere in people's lives. Ceredigion council stopped enforcing any parking, so did the police, and the whole town fell to pieces. Nobody used so-called "common sense", everyone parked where they wanted (including double yellows, pavements, across dropped kerbs and entries), and Ceredigion had to hurry to put new attendants in place to enforce all the rules that "the People" said were just revenue generating nanny-statism.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-77385165424582038132016-10-17T07:47:39.616+01:002016-10-17T07:47:39.616+01:00It's 'egoism' vs 'altruism' !

But this appears to have reached some kind of tipping point - even major newspapers are spouting anti-cycling polemic now, while communities from Ayr to Peterborough to Mansfield to Bedford to Eastbourne are enacting anti-cycling measures. How do you turn that round? Appealing to kids futures seems to get nowhere. It's all very depressing at the moment.

Jitensha OniAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-16684267162136480382016-10-16T04:05:20.882+01:002016-10-16T04:05:20.882+01:00I also see violations of the law occurring with th...I also see violations of the law occurring with the equality legislation that is sometimes encoded as laws that are superior to even other laws. Oh for example laws that protect equality based on age but provides so little for those not old enough to be able to drive, or those who are so old that they can't drive. It's so bad it would reach the illegal level in my opinion in the UK and elsewhere. It's also, unlike something like say the inability to get money to drive, is not solvable with anything other than just waiting. Maybe 12 years for a 5 year old who could walk to school then going to drive on their own at 17 in the UK to a vocational school.

Oh, and I also should point out that a tremendous amount of these biases is from what is different to that of now. For example many in the US fear a universal healthcare system out of worry for their taxes or not having health insurance but yet as a proportion of income, their health spending would likely be lower and they wouldn't need health insurance anymore. Guns too have this argument, the people in the UK like it not having so many guns and why you guys don't want your cops to have guns while so many people in so many other countries, even Japan, want their police to have guns on their belts. Same with transport infrastructure, you don't have an argument if say a cycle track is built and people can't find a proven negative effect, either from statistics or just by interacting with it, like how it's still easy to find parking or that the delays are still not long. It's called the status quo bias. I suggested a much neede road crossing as this would enable pedestrians and cyclists to bring trade into the town centre. Cue much agreement. However, as soon as one person raised a positive just for cyclists, people started shouting him down with the usual issues of dangers to pedestrians, not paying road tax, etc. Lesson learnt: Find the common cause to build the coalition of interests.Adamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06764801041477493876noreply@blogger.com
