My arch enemy is a traffic engineer who emigrated to Australia from the UK, so he could continue plying his trade, widening carriageways. He doesn't worry about knocking down buildings. He just narrows the footpaths.
I look forward to a blog post with tips for driving traffic engineers so crazy they decide to retire. @BehoovingMovinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16755099168773616741noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-23580114200618464972014-07-30T06:50:06.590+01:002014-07-30T06:50:06.590+01:00The main reason I switched from car to bike was jo...The main reason I switched from car to bike was journey time certainty and being frustrated at being stuck in daily traffic jams! The Ranty Highwaymanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17361350433158148025noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-80611497647352916582014-07-29T11:39:42.546+01:002014-07-29T11:39:42.546+01:00> However, walking (and cycling to a slightly l...> However, walking (and cycling to a slightly lesser extent) has the fantastic advantage of being almost completely predictable in respect of journey time.

Yep - agree, big advantage walking/cycling campaigners need to shout about more often (along with costs) IMOLonely Joe Parkerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00327590743293961202noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-40295156704509598992014-07-29T06:56:26.153+01:002014-07-29T06:56:26.153+01:00In some ways, the commute by car to Central London...In some ways, the commute by car to Central London would be better as they would be travelling on essentially urban motorways (although I wouldn't dream of driving in myself).

All of these little short journeys added up create much of the local congestion. Some of the people I work with drive in fairly long distances as there are no public transport (rail) opportunities which are direct. The 0.9 milers clog up the roads for those people who might currently have little transport choice (unless it means a job closer to home of course!)The Ranty Highwaymanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17361350433158148025noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-2193855381512270382014-07-29T06:53:06.585+01:002014-07-29T06:53:06.585+01:00I don't have those conversations every day, bu...I don't have those conversations every day, but I have them often. If we are looking to change our relationship with cars in our towns and cities (and the conversation was not about trunk roads), then it is these attitudes which need tackling.

Yes, Robert, those objecting to schemes normally come at it from a selfish point of view (which is kind of understandable). Objections to schemes because of the safety of others is a common theme, but when you get to the truth, it is because the scheme means the objector cannot park where they want or drive how they want. The Ranty Highwaymanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17361350433158148025noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-87674607115221065122014-07-28T08:52:22.816+01:002014-07-28T08:52:22.816+01:00They are not totally stupid, that would be car-com...They are not totally stupid, that would be car-commuting all the way into central London. Plus, I'd give them some leeway on walking times, people can vary a lot in what speed they can comfortably walk at. However, walking (and cycling to a slightly lesser extent) has the fantastic advantage of being almost completely predictable in respect of journey time.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-18154554229807284122014-07-27T20:32:00.643+01:002014-07-27T20:32:00.643+01:00"Congestion" is OTHER people getting in ..."Congestion" is OTHER people getting in "your way".

"Your way" is what you have decided belongs to you.

You are never, never, ever responsible for congestion yourself.

You should be able to drive where you want, when you want, for whatever reason you want, and - of course , this is the most important - how you want.

Car culture has been pandered to forever.

My favourites from my own LA experience was the secretary of a residents association who wrote to complain about the ASL box reducing capacity and "causing congestion". Oh no, it was the local residents who rang up because the green resin from ACLs had been laid too heavily and all these green granules were , well, lying about in the road.

No, I lie. My all time favourite was the ex-taxi driver objecting to a zebra crossing outside a school. he (correctly) said that a child would not NECCESARILY be killed if one was not there - there was only an increased chance of child being killed without the crossing - but he would definitely lose his parking space and have to park round the corner. So he organised local residents against the crossing and the craven local Councillor gave in.

Dr Robert Davis, Chair RDRFAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
