I grew up in Colindale, and as a teenager and young adult most of my trips were not suburb-city, but intra and inter suburb. School in Edgware, then Mill Hill. Jobs in various other suburbs. Church in Burnt Oak. Dentist in Mill Hill East. Supermarket in Kingsbury. Diffuse travel patterns, that don't lend themselves to public transport. Many get done by car. Most could be done by bike if the infrastructure was there (in fact I used to do some of these by bike, but it wasn't pleasant even in the 1990s.)

Plus in the "London isn't Amsterdam" stakes, no, it isn't, so maybe we need to do some things differently. Maybe those longer distances from suburb to city could be viable if we built express cycleways. Like they're doing to connect inter-dependent Dutch cities, just ours will all be in the built-up area.
