That's what you're doing, by crossing other than on green man. It's also what everyone does when they ignore the stagger and walk straight across. they've designed-in failure.

So, why not just scrap the stagger? Glad to see that's what WF are proposing just up the road from me at Forest rd/Blackhorse lane. That is a truly unfriendly crossing at the moment, and there's about to be significantly larger numbers of pedestrians wanting to cross from the station to the new builds (student housing, and others) on the north west corner.jrghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07573166413654366036noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-59079278669822745292017-07-12T10:25:46.377+01:002017-07-12T10:25:46.377+01:00I actually *like* staggered crossings as a pedestr...I actually *like* staggered crossings as a pedestrian, because they're usually faster to cross. That's because:

- one half of the crossing (where traffic enters the junction) has a green man for most of the cycle.
- the other half of the crossing (where traffic leaves the junction) has fewer lanes, and so can usually be crossed perfectly safely without waiting for the green man.

I would agree that for cyclists these staggered crossings are terrible because you have to start and stop multiple times. But for most pedestrians they are better in my opinion.David Colliernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-31020314000697008952017-07-11T20:43:45.315+01:002017-07-11T20:43:45.315+01:00Why not a protected intersection with:

The key is to have decent vehicle speed detection which can take into account those choosing to speed and who might not stop in time (notwithstanding the fact they should speed). Its cut off from Corby by the A6003 which is a locally important road, currently at national speed limit. So crossing the ring road is critical for existing and new residents to access primary schools and so the new place becomes part of the host town. However, for reasons of capacity, we have a staggered crossing with guard rail and waiting times. It would be lovely if some of the London examples could be tried in the Counties. Maybe we need some sort of workshop/study tour about crossing major roads. This must be an issue for almost every urban extension in the country so I reckon it would help a lot of people. CIHT and Urban Design Group joint thing maybe? It would help me!Amy Burbidgehttps://twitter.com/AmyBurbidge2noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-68190826791204358042017-07-08T20:39:37.659+01:002017-07-08T20:39:37.659+01:00In Hatfield we have a horrible roundabout with tra...In Hatfield we have a horrible roundabout with traffic lights to the west of the Galleria shopping centre. So pedestrians press button, wait for green, but cross if it's clear. Motorists then stop at red and moan about it being unnecessary as no one crossing. Arguably, Peds also putting selves at risk.

Abroad, on busy urban dual carriageway, a pelican went was straight, not staggered (so to speak!). Pressing button changed lights immediately, and you could cross the whole road. Result: nobody crossed anywhere other than the crossing, making it infinitely safer.
