Of course, not being involved in the schemes, I don't know what data is being collected and so I can only ever go by anecdote with this sort of tour. The Ranty Highwaymanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17361350433158148025noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-19775936994516613132015-12-28T14:38:38.520+00:002015-12-28T14:38:38.520+00:00The reason I prefer the scientific approach is tha...The reason I prefer the scientific approach is that science never conducts itself as a popularity contest. It's not about how many page views you have, or how many twitter followers, it's whether you can make definite predictions about the results of future observations through testable, reproducible, and falsifiable theories.

You say that the journey starts with one step (or turn of the wheel), but what is the evidence that isolated high-engineered schemes are the best place to begin? Where's that written down?

Happy New Year, Ranty. As I understand it, both the main Mayoral candidates have put the brakes on the CS programme, which is potentially bad news for CS4, the remainder of CS5, CS9 and CS10, with CS6 and CS12 having already been cancelled. According to the LCC website, CS11 is due for completion by December 2016.

You probably saw that the Sunday Politics show recently showed pictures of an empty cycle highway. Just to put this into some perspective, Simon Munk's three-and-a-half minute video of him using CS5 (here) shows three other cyclists and more than sixty pedestrians.

Anyway, they had a debate about the cycle superhighways, and Camilla van Deurs was asked if she had concerns about schemes like this in a city like London. "The real concern," she said, "is the connecting network."

How long will Londoners have to put up with, to some extent, empty cycle superhighways and busy roads full of traffic? "Well," Camilla van Deurs explained, "the surrounding network is simply not there yet [...]. Unless this becomes a fine grain network that supersedes [sic] all the different areas within London, there's simply not going to be enough people to get to the cycle highways."

Now, I know from Janette Sadik-Khan's TED talk (here) that in New York they "moved quickly to create an inter-connected network of lanes."
Camilla van Deurs made the point that, as a result, the cycling population in New York increased by over 500% "in just two years". Comparatively, she also noted that the number of *new* cyclists increases by 20% on just one route "if there is a kerb".

So this is the point, then. If you have a cycling population of, say, 250,000, and if 2,000 cyclists use one particular route, and you install a kerb along this route, then at the end of the first year, your cycling population would number 250,400; at the end of the second year 250,880; and so on.

Andrew Gilligan is reporting a 30% increase in cycle traffic on the new section of CS5, but I'll bet anyone a pound to a pinch of dust that most of that increase is due to *existing* cyclists who have adjusted their route.

Anyway, you're suggesting that, come the summer, you will be able to say, "See! What was all the fuss about? Isolated pieces of high-quality infrastructure do work!" Well, we already know that's not true, so it will be interesting to see what happens.bikemapperhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16902775699101288384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1828166865647185633.post-88519940771017140952015-12-14T12:41:08.490+00:002015-12-14T12:41:08.490+00:00"...especially with vertical curbs..."
